Lombok Earthquake – A guide to Donate

Due to the growing number of aid organisations and campaigns requiring support for the recent and widespread earthquake devastation in Lombok and the Gili Islands, the following overview was created to streamline the process of choosing a reputable and trustworthy organisation making it more likely the right support and donations will reach those who need it most. The purpose is to centralise the information regarding the ways one can help because currently information is scattered and confusing, and to organise it in such a way that you can make an informed decision. We are not endorsing particular organisations, nor are we liable for their actions – good or bad!

Update 8/8/18 7pm – The situation on the ground is quite hectic. Government boots finally landed today, a welcome reprieve for current organisations and victims who, for the past 3 days bravely faced the terrible and heartbreaking situation together. Assistance was provided as best possible to the thousands of victims with limited resources, no electricity or wifi and distribution of survival basics like shelter, water, food, medical and SO MUCH MORE was a desperate, sleep-deprived, indescribable effort. The government should have been clapping the moment they landed. The area has yet to be declared a natural disaster which means Lombok is not receiving international aid….and is dependent on other forms of support.

The situation is much more dire than we have been led to believe with thousands of people homeless and displaced, the death toll continues to rise along with the number of orphaned children, easily in the hundreds. If you want to help and make an impact, read on.

All organisations and campaigns were sourced using local Facebook Community Groups such as Canggu Community, Bali Expats, Lombok Community etc… and then categorised under the following headings:

  1. Lombok-Based Charities and NGOs
  2. Indonesian Charities and NGOs
  3. Crowdfunding Campaigns to support NGOs/Charities/Local Causes

How you can help:

  • Donate money – (choose an organisation from the list below)
  • Donate goods and supplies to confirmed drop off stations – (check the section for Goods Donations -and try to donate the day before the deadline)
  • Send a care package FOR FREE to Lombok: PT Pos Indonesia opened free shipping for victims of the Lombok disaster (See instructions Below)
  • Attend one of the many fundraisers scheduled – (check the section on fundraisers)
  • Volunteer – Please note, those experienced with disaster relief suggest people stay away and allow experienced responders to arrive first and assess. When there are limited resources and no infrastructure, extra manpower is a detriment to the victims.

Donations

The most effective form of donation if you want to help is giving money because it’s the fuel that drives the engine; specifically, teams on the ground can execute faster and more accurately. Another option is to mix it up, such as attend a local evening fundraiser with friends, make a donation to an organisation, and make some space by donating stuff you don’t use – this can be a much more impactful and rewarding experience.

Choosing your organization

Knowing which campaign or organization to choose as the bridge can be a difficult decision especially when you’re short on time and people are desperate for aid.

Note about crowdfunding campaigns like GoFundme: Charity Navigator recommends donating to online fundraisers created by individuals with one degree of separation, unless the fundraiser was created by a registered public 501(c)(3) organization.

Some things to bear in mind when selecting an organisation for donation:

  • Location – where are they based? How big and badly damaged is the area that they are trying help and are they alone in their efforts? The North of Lombok has been the hardest hit.
  • Are they addressing short, medium or long term objectives? The distribution of basic necessities is crucial at this point but in 2 or 3 weeks time, funds are needed to rebuild because so many are homeless.
  • What percentage reaches the people who need it? Gofundme’s are taxed by 30%
  • Are they fluent in Bahasa Indonesia? Are they familiar with the culture?
  • Have they made an accurate cost assessment and provided a budget?
  • Have they made an accurate assessment of the situation and needs and communicated this (including medical and training)? How do they plan to respond to the assessment?
  • Are they providing a consistent method of communication, updating regularly what is happening on the ground?
  • How experienced are they with responding to natural disasters? How long have they been operating?
  • Have they mobilised local volunteers and how?
  • How caring and compassionate are their updates?
  • Do they have a good network of contacts including government?
  • What kind of skills does their team have?
  • Are they working or partnering with other organisations, especially local organisations?
  • How transparent are they about what they are using the funds for? Some provide shopping lists.
  • Do they have an existing budget or are they entirely reliant on donations? Have they raised funds before? If so, do they provide a record?
  • Are they organised and able to project manage?
  • How do they support trauma victims?
